The rates of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and chronic respiratory diseases are rapidly increasing in almost all countries such that these are now among the world’s biggest killers. There is a growing recognition that the development of these diseases may have their roots in our earliest days of life within the uterine environment and up to the age of two years and that early intervention is a cost-effective means of preventing NCDs later in life. Therefore, pregnancy offers a unique window of opportunity to turn the tide of the NCD epidemic.  more[...]  login_required

In 2006, Merck introduced RotaTeq®, its rotavirus vaccine, in the U.S. Merck recognized, however, that this vaccine was most needed in the developing world but that it would be unsustainable to donate it on an ongoing basis – it needed to identify a sustainable business model. Through the Merck-Nicaraguan Ministry of Health RotaTeq® Partnership Merck pledged to donate enough rotavirus vaccine for three birth cohorts of children and funding to introduce the vaccine, improve disease awareness, develop appropriate educational materials, and update the routine vaccination card. Our goal was to demonstrate the feasibility and health benefit of introducing the vaccine in a developing country.  more[...]  login_required

  • Improving the Future of Epileptic Patients

    Mireille Cayreyre, Sanofi Aventis
    Sanofi

Epilepsy is not a cause of significant mental impediments. Nevertheless, it is often falsely perceived as a mental disorder in developing countries. Although epilepsy is not fatal, patients who do not receive treatment will experience serious difficulties over their lifetime. In addition to the disease being a handicap in daily life and work, over time, people with epilepsy face social marginalization or even exclusion. In turn, the social group itself is deprived of their economic and social contributions. To address this disease in developing countries, all of these factors need to be taken into account. Sanofi-aventis, as a leader in the global pharmaceutical industry, is thus providing developing countries not only facilitated access to its quality medicines, but also a large number of health services that respond to their specific needs.
